Advice Column
Dear Ellie and Ivy,

My next door neighbor keeps coming over and asking for my mom RIGHT after she leaves. He just keeps doing it, so maybe it is just a practical joke. I mean, he can see her car pull out from the driveway. But he is staying persistent. What should I do?
-Very Annoyed

Dear Very Annoyed,
Simply tell him to stop. If this doesn't work, tell your mom so she can talk to him about it. If he backs away, you know its a joke. If not. he actually needs to talk to her.
                                    -Ivy and Ellie

Dear Ellie and Ivy,
My dad smokes and I have told him what I learned in D.A.R.E, but he said that dare is a bunch of lies. I asked him if he would at least if he would try to stop. He said yes, but he always says that he has to make a phone call and I caught him smoking and putting the rest of it in an empty flower pot. Should I confront him? Should I not, I don’t know, please help.
                               -Confused

Dear Confused,
is your dad hurting other people, or just himself? If he is hurting others, you should get professional help or call the police. If not, tell him about E-cigarettes or chewing gum. Ask other friends for advice if all else fails.
                                 -Ivy and Ellie

Daybooks for Critical Reading and Thinking, the Civil War and Mildred Taylor.

As a class, we've discussed how there are different types of reading. For example, there is at home reading, school reading, fiction and non-fiction reading. One question related to reading that we're trying to answer is, "What can we do as readers to think about our reading as we're reading and also remember more about we've read?" Today, we implemented a strategy to help us achieve this goal.

Our journey toward achieving this goal began today in our LRC where the students were directed to select a book about the Civil War. When we examined the works of Mildred Taylor in our Daybook for Critical Reading and Writing, it became apparent that the students had misunderstandings about the Civil War era. However, it isn't enough to just read the material. We have to keep our reading goal in mind. The activity and responses shown below are one more attempt of us making progress toward our goal. Enjoy.

Advice column
Dear Ivy and Ellie,
My little brother is only three years old but he still wrestles me and beats me up. My mom says that I am older than him and I can just tell him to stop, but he won't. What should I do? -Younger Than Brother

Dear Younger Than Brother,
I have had this problem before, and if you can't just walk away, talk with you brother. Tell him that it hurts and that you want him to stop it. If this doesn't work tell a parent so they can put an end to it. -Ivy+Ellie

Dear Ellie+Ivy,
I sleep with a lot of stuffed animals, and I mean a LOT. I try to stop, but I can’t resist cuddling with them. Do you have any idea how I could stop sleeping with Rover and Fluffy?
                            -I Need Cuddles

Dear I Need Cuddles,
Its okay to want some cuddles sometimes. Try maybe picking your favorite stuffed animal  and taking turns with your stuff your animals. Everyone has that one animal friend that they really need.-Ellie+Ivy

Daily Five Interview-Ivy and Amanda

                                        Daily Five Interview

Why do teachers do Daily Five? It's time to find out. Ivy and Amanda interviewed four Emerson teachers who were visiting in Lincoln to learn about Daily Five. They thought that Daily Five was a good way for young students to learn fluency and practice their writing. Next, Amanda asked some of Mrs.Maisonette's some questions about Daily Five. If you what to learn about this popular method, watch this interview!

Lincoln Helps!
Ms. Thompson has put on a new club for Lincoln 5th graders. In this club we help the visually impaired shop at the Giant Eagle that's down the street. The first and second days were spent training, so we would know what to do and different ways they might like to us to help them with. On the second day Ms. Thompson brought in glasses that had black dots in the middle of each lens, or had been covered a lens with tape. She did this so we could see out of the shopper's eyes. Mrs. Thompson said that all the visually impaired people really appreciate us helping them. The first real day was very exciting. I was filming. As I walked around the store I saw how all the students would jump up to the opportunity to help if whoever they were helping wanted something. At the end, one lady was almost crying as she said how thankful she was for us helping her.

What Did I MISS?
207-A had something special that we did with with our BFF’s this past week. It was called MISS, or Most Important Special Sentence. It was were we had to write a sentence about a book we read with our BFF (Book Friends Forever) and we had to find what sentence we felt was the best, coolest, or most explanatory of our book. When we found our MISS, we were to make a presentation about it then share it with the class 201’s 1st graders. Part of this project that was memorable was the fact that we really got to talk and really find out what our BFF’S think about books, we also get to know our BFF’S a little better and  it helped us realize what things about books appeal to them.  Another small idea that we got out of this project is how to animate a presentation which we can use in projects ahead of us.
The main thing we learned is that a sentence can completely change a book, or even the world!
Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened. - Doctor Seuss
If you can dream you can achieve  it - Random
A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. - Albert Einstein
Houston, we have a problem.-James A. Lovell.
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.- Abraham Lincoln
